Well, we’ve waited 36 years, but Maverick is back and yes, it’s true — the Iceman cometh, too.
And I’m not talking Lee Marvin, people. I’m talking the real, true, one and only Iceman. The guy so cold he was hot. Yep, it’s Val Kilmer.
We never believed something so perfect could happen again, but Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer are reprising their roles as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the sequel to one of the biggest blockbusters of all time: Top Gun: Maverick.
To say people are excited would be an understatement, and we cannot blame them. Even the cast of the upcoming sequel, due in theaters May 24, is over the moon to be involved in such a culturally important film. But it’s the Maverick / Iceman reunion that had them pretending not to cry and suddenly noticing the day’s high pollen count.
We won’t fare any better, I fear.
Because Maverick and Iceman are ours. They belong to us. We were the kids that were flying right there with them. We saw all of the magic and power Top Gun held through the eyes of kids and adults alike. When Maverick buzzed the tower? We were there. When Goose (Oh, here I go…) died? We were there. And when the former bitter rivals turned into teammates, friends and heroes? Oh, yeah. We were there. Over and over.
We grew up with them, so to see them together again? That is a gift to us all and we will be there for it. Over and over again.
PS: Sorry to any interested parties, but there is no volleyball in this one. There is however a football game that doesn’t look half bad (wink, wink).
See the new kids on the set gush love for the old guys in this video from ETOnline:
