According to polls by Gallup, President Joe Biden’s approval rating stood at 42 percent most recently after having stagnated at a low level for several months. The rating is sticking despite much higher approval of 53 percent of the president’s coronavirus response.

Biden might be able to improve his rating through his upcoming trip to Europe in connection with the crucial topic of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Right now, Biden’s response to Russia was equally tepid as is overall approval rating at just 42 percent.

All three most recent U.S. Presidents – Joe Biden, Donald Trump and Barack Obama – saw their popularity deteriorate right at the start of their presidencies. Obama took the biggest plunge but Biden’s initial drop in approval comes close. Trump started with a lower approval rating of only around 45 percent, reached a low of 35 percent in August and was back up to 38 percent in September 2017. He was, however, able to surpass his starting approval later, in his fourth year in office, something that never happened for Obama.

Close to the end of his time in office, Trump’s approval rating reached an all-time low. Between Jan 4 and 15, only 34 percent of U.S. adults approved of the president.

Obama’s and Trump’s approval ratings in relation to the time they had been in office came pretty close to each other in their third year. In early 2020, Trump’s ratings picked up, hitting 49 percent at the end of January (month 36) during impeachment hearings in the Senate and overtaking Obama’s at the time.

According to Gallup, Obama’s approval rating was only 45 percent at the same time in January 2012, following low job creation and a feud with the Republicans about raising the debt ceiling. Later in 2012, Obama was able to recover his ratings somewhat and reached 47 percent in late July after the Affordable Care Act was upheld by the Supreme Court.

There has been a 21 point drop in approval with members of Generation Z (born 1997 to 2004) since the first half of 2021, bringing the rate down to just 39 percent, the lowest of all the generation groups having been joint highest with Millennials. Speaking of which, those born between 1981 and 1996 registered a 19-point decrease in approval of the president, falling to 41 percent, and one percent below the national average of 42 percent.

Gallup provides some context for the changes: “By the summer (of 2021), as coronavirus cases unexpectedly rose, Biden had lost significant support among Generation Z, millennials and Generation X, ranging from seven- to ten-percentage-point drops. But his approval rating held steady among baby boomers and traditionalists. All generational groups have become less approving of Biden since the summer, after the troubled U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in late August 2021, with the exception of traditionalists, whose approval has not changed.”
