The song ‘Something’ by The Beatles is beautiful. It is considered to be one of the greatest love songs of all time, but would it have been just as great if the lyric was “Attracts me like a pomegranate…?”
Makes you think, huh?
So does this behind the scenes look at The Beatles rehearsing and attempting to flesh out the very beginnings of ‘Something” from Disney Plus’s The Beatles: Get Back documentary. I mean, we all know the story. We know that their end as a band is looming. We’ve seen the films, we’ve read the books, we’ve watched and watched again as the flaming car races towards the cliff’s edge, unable to look away though our hearts are breaking. It’s part of our collective history.
But, this? This is something special. A gift.
Imagine (of course I did that on purpose) this footage as a window framing a view we thought we knew. As we watch we see the intricacies of the relationships. There is tension, yes, but there’s more. It’s a view of four incredibly gifted men coming together in the creative process, each adding a part of themselves. When Ringo just knows what to do on the drums? Oh, yes. THAT’S when the song becomes something we feel. When we can feel the Beatles in it. It’s magical.
And it’s funny. They play when they play. There is a camaraderie that’s loose and familiar and easy to watch. They joke, they tease each other, they consider making “Attracts me like a pomegranate….” the second line in one of the most beautiful love songs ever.
And as they play with the lyrics, the music, we can see that here, in this snapshot of time, there is truth.
There is love.
