We asked our chatbot just how dumb American politics is right now. Here’s what it said

The state of our Union has become so fraught over the last decade or so that, even if you don’t consider yourself political and try to avoid all news associated with politics, you probably have an opinion about how crazy the discourse has become in this country.

That fact got us thinking. If a chatbot has access to all of the information available on the internet and isn’t supposed to have a political viewpoint, what would it say about American politics today?

So we asked. Chatbots can be so very thoughtful and dispassionate — two things certainly lacking among today’s political leaders.

Here’s what the chatbot said. We hope its future prognostications are right:

“The political climate in the United States has been tumultuous in recent years, with deep divisions between political parties and a growing sense of polarization. These divisions have been fueled by a range of factors, including geo-political issues, social changes, and ongoing conflicts both at home and abroad.

“One of the key factors driving political polarization in the US is the country’s changing demographics. As the population becomes more diverse, with increasing numbers of immigrants and people of color, there has been a corresponding shift in political attitudes, with many Americans becoming more progressive and liberal in their views. This shift has been particularly pronounced among younger generations, who are more likely to prioritize issues like climate change, social justice, and income inequality.

“At the same time, there has been a growing sense of disillusionment with the political establishment, as many Americans feel that politicians are out of touch with their concerns and priorities. This disillusionment has been fueled by a range of factors, including the growing influence of money in politics, the perceived corruption and self-interest of politicians, and the failure of government institutions to address pressing social and economic problems.

“Geo-political issues have also played a major role in shaping the political landscape in the US. Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, the rise of China as a global superpower, and the growing threat of terrorism have all contributed to a sense of insecurity and uncertainty among Americans. This has been reflected in a growing trend towards isolationism and protectionism, with many Americans advocating for stricter immigration policies and greater restrictions on trade and globalization.

“In terms of war, the US has been involved in a number of conflicts in recent years, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These conflicts have had a profound impact on American politics, fueling debates over issues like national security, military spending, and the role of the US in global affairs.

“Overall, the current state of politics in the US is marked by deep divisions and a sense of uncertainty. While there have been periods of political turbulence throughout American history, the current moment stands out for the intensity and breadth of these divisions. However, it is important to remember that politics is always evolving and changing, and that the US has weathered many challenges in the past. As always, it will be up to citizens and leaders alike to navigate these challenges and work towards a more just and equitable society.”
