The Hyundai Grandeur Concept is an ’80s Sedan Reborn as a Luxury EV

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of 1986 Hyundai Grandeur flagship sedan Hyundai launched the Hyundai Grandeur Heritage Series concept, the second Heritage Series concept after the Heritage Series Pony.

A Symbol of Flagship Status

The original Hyundai Grandeur, first launched in 1986, was the brand’s premiere executive sedan. Hyundai designers took a genuine first-generation Grandeur and completely overhauled it.

However, despite its road-ready appearance, the Heritage Series Grandeur will not be produced. Instead, the project is a chance for Hyundai to use its back catalog as inspiration for future designs.

Heritage Meets Technology

From the outside, the concept retains the classic boxy silhouette of the ’80s sedan, but with crucial modern upgrades:

  • Electric Powertrain: The internal combustion engine has been replaced with a battery and motor, making it a pure EV.
  • Parametric Pixel Lighting: Just like the production-ready IONIQ 5, the Grandeur concept features the brand’s signature Parametric Pixel headlights and taillights, fusing the retro box shape with digital-age lighting elements.
  • Subtle Exterior Tweaks: New side mirrors, covered wheels, and subtle slide cladding complete the electric transformation.

A Luxurious Time Warp

The interior is designed using Hyundai “Newtro” concept, mixing luxurious materials with next-generation technology:

  • Lavish Materials: The seats are covered in a combination of rich, burgundy velvet (inspired by the original 1986 upholstery) and elegantly stitched auburn Nappa leather.
  • Vintage Cues: The cabin retains ’80s features like the single-spoke steering wheel and a jet airplane-style gear selector. Retro bronze ambient lighting completes the vintage atmosphere.
  • Ultra-Modern Tech: The dashboard features a massive, ultra-wide display and a long vertical screen on the center fascia that controls the infotainment system, driving modes, and HVAC.
  • Unique Features: The concept includes several delightful touches, such as a hidden watch slot in the center console and a virtual piano integrated into the digital display, created in collaboration with Samick, allowing drivers to compose music on the road.
  • Concert Hall Acoustics: The sound system features a unique four-way, 18-speaker setup designed with acoustic theory in mind, utilizing 45-degree angled speakers to provide unparalleled clarity throughout the cabin.

A Look Back To Define The Future

“As our designers conceive the future, it’s important to look back on what we’ve created in the past and find inspiration in it.”, Hak-soo Ha, head of interior group of the hyundai design center

The Heritage Series Grandeur is a bold statement from Hyundai, showing that looking back at an icon can inspire a stylish, high-tech, and luxurious vision for the future of electric mobility.
