The resume looked perfect.
Twenty-five years of industry experience. Crisis management credentials. A track record of building client relationships that generated millions in revenue.
The rejection email arrived in forty-eight hours. “We’ve decided to move forward with other candidates who better align with our company culture.”
Translation: You’re too old.
This happens thousands of times every week in America. Companies are bleeding money on preventable mistakes while systematically excluding the professionals who could spot those problems in minutes.
LinkedIn career experts have confirmed what anyone over 50 already knows: ageism in hiring has become systematic. Companies disguise it behind corporate speak about “culture” and “energy” and “fresh perspectives.”
But those fresh perspectives lack something critical: pattern recognition earned through multiple recessions, industry disruptions, and market cycles.
Crisis management comes from being in the room when everything goes wrong. Client loyalty takes decades to develop. Institutional memory saves companies from repeating expensive mistakes.
When Boeing prioritized cost-cutting over experienced engineers, people died. When financial institutions replaced veteran risk managers, the global economy nearly collapsed.
A 25-year-old might work faster. A 55-year-old knows which work actually needs to be done.
The workplace needs what Boomers and Gen X professionals offer: steadiness during chaos, wisdom earned through failure, and confidence from actually solving complex problems.
What’s been your experience with age bias in hiring? Have you seen companies pay the price for excluding experienced professionals?
We wrote a piece for MediaFeed exploring how Boomers and Gen Xers can leverage their expertise in today’s job market. See if you agree.
