Classic news: Anti-gay activist gets pie to the face

In 1977, the singer and former Miss Oklahoma Anita Bryant was holding a press conference in Des Moines – the subject of which was her long-standing opposition to homosexuality (she fought for laws that allowed discrimination against gays in housing, employment, adoption and public accommodation. Shortly after the press conference began, and midway through a sentence, Ms. Bryant was pied in the face by an onlooker, Thom L. Higgins, as documented by NBC News in the video below.

After she was hit with the pie, Bryant briefly wept and prayed for the pie thrower, who responded by saying, “Thus always to bigots.”
