Nothing gets us out of bed faster than the smell of bacon sizzling on a griddle. We love every crispy morsel of this smoky salt-cured pork belly. We love bacon and bacon-wrapped everything. And we’re not alone. Americans consume an average of 17.9 lbs. of bacon each year, and there are holidays to celebrate bacon, including a day devoted to those who love bacon.
Whether served with eggs, topped on a burger, or eaten as a delicious appetizer, bacon is sweet and savory and makes every dish it’s added to so much better. We don’t need a holiday to remind us how amazing bacon is, but we sure love a reason to bring home the bacon and eat extra slices and slabs of bacon.

National Bacon Lovers Day History
Bacon dates back to 1500 B.C. in China. In the 12th century, a church in England gave bacon to any husband who was willing to swear that he had not argued with his wife for one year and one year.
In the 16th century, bringing home strips of bacon was a sign of affluence. Men would “bring home the bacon” and sit around “chewing the fat” with family and friends. It’s not surprising that a love for bacon has endured for centuries.
National Bacon Lovers Day has been celebrated since 2015 after some social media posts promoting bacon went viral. Bacon is the top mentioned pork product on social media.
Another bacon holiday, National Bacon Day, was started in 1997 by college students Danya “D” Goodman and Meff “Human Cannonball” Leonard, who encouraged eating bacon while watching movies starring actor Kevin Bacon.
Additional bacon holidays include:
- March 1: National Pig Day
- First Saturday of September (September 7, 2024): International Bacon Day
- December 30: National Bacon Day
