Ick-inducing ice cream flavors
Full disclosure: We understand and appreciate that everyone comes equipped with a different palate. Yet, there are some ice cream flavors that push the envelope right into that realm of grotesque and repulsion. Some might pique your interest. You might shrug and say, “I’d try it.” Or you might look like that little green-faced, nauseated emoji when after you finish scrolling through this round-up. Who knows.
1. Onion
Where to find it: VanLeeuwenicecream.com
VanLeewen, we don’t care if you rolled this out in honor of the “Glass Onion: Knives Out” movie. If this ice cream was scooped into a bowl, you’d think it was vanilla with luscious caramel ribbons swirled throughout. Until you stuck a spoonful in your mouth and violated your tastebuds with pungent onion flavor.
2. Lobster
Where to find it: Ben & Bill’s Chocolate Emporium in Oak Bluffs, Massachussets
New England is known for fresh lobster. While tourists usually stick to lobster rolls to quell their crustacean cravings, this ice cream joint offers a vanilla variety chock full of fresh lobster chunks.
3. Sriracha
Where to find it: Yum Dragon Ice Cream in Honolulu, Hawaii
Chiliheads won’t be mad at this one, but to the folks who exclusively enjoy their ‘racha drizzled over stir fry or adorning a bowl of ramen, this one might send a shudder down their spine.
5. Fig and fresh brown turkey
Where to find it: il laboratorio del gelato in New York, New York (or online)
This is giving Violet Beauregarde vibes. You know, when she chewed that experimental piece of bubblegum in “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” that was supposed to emulate a three-course dinner. We’re pretty sure eating a scoop of this wouldn’t turn you into a blueberry though.
6. Roasted garlick
Where to find it: Wingie Ice Cream in Honolulu, Hawaii
Garlic breath served in a scoop, anyone? The vanilla-to-garlic ratio must be spot-on because Wingie patrons are supposedly ga-ga for garlic.
7. Wasabi
Where to find it: il laboratorio del gelato in New York, New York (or online)
The flavor innovators over at il laboratorio del gelato really must not have an off-limits they adhere to. Some of us take the tiniest dab of wasabi with our sushi and others order a colossal cone of it. To each their own.
8. Squid ink
Where to find it: Masiwa in South Korea
If you like calamari as an appetizer, you might as well end your meal with squid ink ice cream dessert. Right? Right? No one? Anyone? Come on. Its bold, black color makes it compelling and we’re sure there are plenty of people who would give this a whirl just to say they’ve tried it.
9. Pizza
Where to find it: No longer available
Of course VanLeeuwen came out with a pizza flavor. They even followed it up with a Hidden Valley Ranch iteration, and maybe if they debuted those two monstrosities simultaneously, people could have had an otherworldly double dip experience.
10. Kraft mac and cheese
Where to find it: No longer available
You’re either thinking, “The flavor creators at VanLeeuwen need to seek therapy immediately” or you’re thinking, “Darn it! Another innovative ice cream flavor we can’t try because VanLeeu keeps rolling out these unique flavors and then sending them into the discontinued flavor abyss shortly thereafter. We’re willing to bet your mind was on the former. Someone really needs to tell these guys that not every well-loved food works as a frozen dessert. Even the nostalgic ones like Kraft’s mac.
11. Mustard
Where to find it: No longer available
Beloved mustard-maker French’s joined forces with CoolHaus to bring us mustard ice cream and while we aren’t sad that it was for a limited time only, there are apparently enough people who were because McCormick shared a recipe on its website to recreate the bright-yellow dessert in your own kitchen.
12. Buffalo wings
Where to find it: Jacob’s Eats & Treats in Sauyo, Novaliches, Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. Also available online.
All this time we thought the great buffalo wing debate revolved around whether ranch or bleu cheese was better for dipping. We never even thought to ask, “Would it work as an ice cream?”
Spicy pickle
Where to find it: El Paraiso Ice Cream in San Antonio, Texas
Spicy pickle flavor everything is taking over the world. This might be a step too far though, guys. Please. Stop the madness.
