A Closer Look
When she was 95 years old, Estelle Winwood appeared on The Merv Griffin Show and revealed that she smoked three packs of cigarettes per day.
A Brief Overview of Her Long Life and Career
Estelle Winwood was born on January 24, 1883, in Lee, Kent, England. With her mother’s support, but her father’s disapproval, she trained with the Lyric Stage Academy in London. She later made her professional debut in Johannesburg, at just 20 years old.
Into this mix, Winwood would become best friends with actress Tallulah Bankhead from the 1920s until the latter’s demise in 1968.
Winwood had the distinction of portraying TV Perry Mason’s last client. Approximately 15 years later, when she was 96, she appeared on an episode of TV’s Quincy, and officially became the oldest working actor working in America, besting fellow British actress Ethel Griffies.
Director George Cukor passed away mere hours after sending Winwood a telegram for her 100th birthday. When asked how it felt to have lived so long, she replied “How rude of you to remind me!”
Although periodically confused with the classic Hollywood comedic screen actress Una O’Connor, Estelle Winwood was an original all to her own.
