Intended to go into production in late-2021, the Cybertruck is Tesla’s first pickup truck and aesthetically a major departure from the rest of the range. It was announced at a haphazard launch event that saw Musk accidentally smash a window of the truck by throwing a metal ball at it.

Now, and with only occasional public sightings to its name, Musk says the Cybertruck is coming soon. In response to a message asking about the truck’s delivery date on Twitter, Musk said: “Update probably in Q2. Cybertruck will be built in Giga Texas, so focus right now is on getting that beast built.”

Scratched redesign plans

This is welcome news as there have been few updates on the vehicle since it was revealed in November 2019. It was first expected that Tesla would make the truck slightly smaller, but Musk said in May 2020 he had decided against this redesign.

Despite that move, it still isn’t clear if the Cybertruck will be a globally homologated vehicle or if it will only be sold in the US. After its reveal, some claimed that the truck might not pass pedestrian safety requirements in Europe.

Cybertruck price tag

Whatever happened to the Tesla Cybertruck?

Tesla has a habit of making very few changes to vehicles between their first reveal and their going into production, so it will be interesting to see if the Cybertruck follows the same course.

We will also be keen to see if the range figures of between 300 and 500 miles remain accurate and if prices start at $49,000 as originally stated. Tesla has also previously said a $40,000 version will be along later.

Musk’s Q2 prediction suggests more will be said on the vehicle between April and June this year. This could be a look at the production-ready version, or merely another tweet to say when production is expected to begin.
