Whatever you may think on first hearing the name “Muddy Mildred,” you will probably be wrong.

Wait … Yeah, definitely wrong.

Because Muddy Mildred is not a mean name given to the number-one mud pie maker in  Bugtussle, Kentucky (that’s a real, but totally unrelated town name used solely for its comedic value. Don’t get hung up on it. ) out of spite and jealousy. No.

It is an honorific that 83-year-old Mildred Wilson has earned with hard work, sweat and tears, three times over now because Mildred is tough as nails, and she is taking no guff.

She is competing in the hard, rough world of the Tough Mudder. Destroyer of men, equalizer of women, the mud-filled obstacle course has been the bane of many who have believed, wrongly or rightly, that they were tough enough, in shape enough, had the mental acuity to dominate a race that routinely takes out the very people favored to win it all.

You paid attention when I said she’s 83, right?

And guess what? She’s done three Tough Mudder events.

She ran her first Tough Mudder in Missouri, cleverly named The Tough Muddle, after watching her son attempt the World’s Toughest Mudder in Las Vegas several years before, she told Good News Network.

After the event, her son asked her if she would like to attempt one herself. Perhaps suspecting that somewhere deep inside of her lurked the butt-kicking alter ego that has come to be known as Muddy Mildred, she said yes, but with one caveat:

“Yes, but, if I do it, I want to be able to really do it. Not just be out there,” she told KFVS News.

Well, there is no doubt Muddy Mildred is really doing it. She just completed her third Mudder and this time, she was raising money for a well in a small African village. She has raised $3000 of her $5,000 goal already.

And she has blazed a trail for all seniors. It seems that sometimes, being muddy will not give you polio as I was told (thanks, Grandma; instead, it can be the beginning of a whole new dirty, dirty, but incredibly happy you.

Good job, Muddy Mildred.
