There are only 12 countries in the world which offer full legal protections to women, according to the report Women, Business and the Law 2022, recently published by the World Bank.
Scores were given to countries based on laws concerning equal rights for men and women concerning freedom of movement, work, equal pay, marriage, child rearing, business ownership, asset management and pensions.
Spain and Greece were the newcomers among those rated at 100 points this year. Both countries equalized parental leave entitlements between the sexes.

Key findings
In total, 98 countries out of the world’s 194 ranked at 80 percent or above, up from 94 in 2021. Saudi Arabia, which came in last as recently as 2019, has improved its score majorly following new laws implemented in the country and now ranks 98th at 80 percent. The last place in the 2022 ranking went to Yemen (26.9 percent), ahead of Sudan (29.4 percent) and Qatar (29.4 percent).
The United States, with a score of 91.3, ranked below countries like Peru and Albania. It lost points because of a lack of laws guaranteeing equal pay and equal pensions in addition to having notoriously bad laws around parental leave.
Japan and South Korea ranked at approximately 79 percent and 85 percent, respectively, losing most points for the quality of laws concerning equal pay, family and entrepreneurship. Japan also only achieved 50 percent of the score for workplace equality, which includes the areas equal hiring, workplace discrimination and sexual harassment.
